Workshop 1 (Scriptwriting skills and Project Development)

Short Description

It is a two-day workshop on scriptwriting skills and project development on May 4th and 5th, 2007 in Bucharest.

Event venue: Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, Multimedia Auditorium, Sos. Kiseleff nr. 30, sector 1.

Target audience: 20 scriptwriters and 5 observers (the "Observer" status is only for students).

With two full days available, this programme is ambitious and will involve between 6 – 8 hours working time per day (breaks excluded).

The overall goal for the workshop should be to give useful information to scriptwriters, inspire openness and willingness to collaborate within the creative team (scriptwriter-director-producer) and increase the opportunities of market access for Romanian creative talent.

Eligibility

Participants should actively work on a drama project (cinema or television), either as a national or international production. They should be prepared to answer at least some general questions about their projects and should supply at least a one-page synopsis in English.

For the observer status, students in relevant fields of study don't have to work on a project currently. They are not required to send documents related to the project, as do the other candidates.

Workshop 2 (The Five Steps of Film Production)

Short Description

It is a two-day workshop on film production on June 5th and 6th , 2007 in Sibiu ("Lucian Blaga" University - School of Letters and Arts, Victoriei Blvd. 5-7).

Target audience: 20 scriptwriters and 5 observers (the “observer” status will be granted to students interested in film production).

With two full days available, this programme is ambitious and will involve between 6 – 8 hours working time per day (breaks excluded).

There is no participation fee. Funding for transportation and accommodation will not be provided.

The overall goal for the workshop should be to give useful information to producers, inspire openness and willingness to collaborate within the creative team (scriptwriter-director-producer) and increase the opportunities of market access for Romanian creative talent.

Workshop 3 ( Creative documentary filmmaking, TV scheduling, branding and distribution in cooperation with Discovery Campus e.V. - The 3rd Open Training Session of the Discovery Campus Master School 2007)

When: September 13th and 14th, 2007

Where: Hotel Timişoara, Str. Marasesti  1-3, www.hoteltimisoara.ro

Target: 10 Romanian producers of creative documentaries and 10 TV commissioning editors or TV programmers of documentary departments from TV Stations in Romania

With two full days available, this programme is ambitious and will involve between 6 – 8 hours working time per day (breaks excluded).

In addition, participants are invited to attend on September 14th, 2007 from 6 to 9 pm and on September 15th, 2007 from 9.30 am to 8 pm the Open Training Session of the Discovery Campus Master School 2007 “GO EAST on the Crossroads of International Co-productions” – Facilitating Creative and Strategic Partnership with the East.

Facilities for screening a feature documentary and excerpts from DVD are foreseen.

If needed, simultaneous interpretation Romanian/English will be provided by persons that are film literates, as certain terms and concepts will be difficult to understand for persons from outside the industry.

There is no participation fee. Funding for transportation and accommodation will not be provided.

The experts and tutors are willing to make him/her available for informal talks, for example at the lunch-table or over dinner.

Producer Participants should actively work on a creative documentary project (cinema or television), either as a national or international production. They should be prepared to answer at least some general questions about their projects and should supply at least a one-page synopsis in English.

TV commissioning editors and programmers Participants should be actively involved in the decision making procedure of the TV Station.

The overall goal for the workshop is to give useful information to creative documentary producers, TV commissioning editors and programmers, inspire openness and willingness to collaborate together and increase the opportunities of market access for Romanian creative talent and topics.

Workshop 4 (Distribution, exploitation, marketing and promotion of films), in cooperation with NIPKOW Program

When: October 18th and 19th, 2007
Where: Bucharest K+K Hotel Elisabeta
Target:
20 distributors, producers, sales agents, exhibitors and 5 observers (the “observer” status will be granted to students interested in film distribution, exhibition, marketing and promotion)

Description: With two full days available, this programme is ambitious and will involve between 6 – 8 hours working time per day (breaks excluded).

Facilities for screening excerpts from DVD have to be foreseen.

There is no participation fee. Funding for transportation and accommodation will not be provided.

The expert is willing to make him/her available for informal talks at the lunch-table and coffee breaks.

Participants (except the observers) should be actively involved either in film production, distribution, exhibition or marketing of films or in promotion activities in the audio-visual sector.

They should be prepared to answer at least some general questions about their professional activities. Producers should provide at least a one-page synopsis of their film in English.

The overall goal for the workshop is to give useful information to professionals acting in the production, distribution, exhibition and marketing/promotion of films, inspire openness and willingness to collaborate within a creative team and increase the opportunities of market access for Romanian creative talent.

Workshop 5 in cooperation with the ASTRA FILM FESTIVAL and Eurimages on financing of low & medium budgets for feature films and creative documentaries

When: October 25th and 26th, 2007
Where: Sibiu, Casa de Cultura

Target: 20 producers, bankers, officials from public funding bodies, television stations and 5 observers (the “observer” status will be granted to students interested in film financing)

Description: With two full days available, this programme is ambitious and will involve between 6 – 8 hours working time per day (breaks excluded).

Facilities for screening excerpts from DVD have to be foreseen.

Simultaneous interpretation Romanian/English can be provided by persons that are film literates.

There is no participation fee. Funding for transportation and accommodation will not be provided.

The expert is willing to make him/her available for informal talks at the lunch-table and coffee breaks.

Participants (except the observers) should be actively involved either in film production, banking, public or private funding and commissioning of feature films and documentaries in TV stations.
They should be prepared to answer at least some general questions about their professional activities. Producers should provide at least a one-page synopsis of their film in English.

The overall goal for the workshop is to give useful information to professionals acting in the production, and film financing, to inspire openness and willingness to collaborate within creative teams and increase the opportunities of market access for Romanian creative talent.

Workshop 6 (On creative producing – management of an audio-visual company, in cooperation with Maia Workshops)

What: A two-day workshop

When: December 13th and 14th, 2007

Where: Bucharest, Hotel K+K

Target audience:   up to 10 managers, up to 10 producers and up to 10 employees all from up to 10 production companies who work actively on a slate (package) of projects (drama – for cinema and/or television, creative documentaries and animation), either as a national or international production. Because of issues relating to corporate confidentiality, this training module will remain private and inaccessible for observers.

Description: The experts are willing to make themselves available for informal talks, for example at the lunch-table or over dinner.  The one to one sessions are optional: writing Strategic Plans will continue during this time.

The overall goal for the workshop should be to give useful lifelong tools to producers who are often better at the crisis management a film or television shoot requires, than the longer term company management requirements.

Training Scholarship Grants

This Call for Proposals is based on the decision taken by the European Commission's PHARE Programme for the implementation of the support project “Enhancement and development of the professional expertise of the Romanian audiovisual sector”. The project purpose is to strengthen the audiovisual sector in Romania, with the aim to promote European cultural diversity and to develop a viable national audiovisual industry.

The objectives of the present Call for Proposals are to select Romanian audiovisual professionals and provide them with a scholarship in order to participate in a training course co-financed by the MEDIA Programme. See the list of activities on the following websites: European Commission; scheduled within the time frame of the PHARE Project on: http://www.cncinema.ro and http://www.pre-mediasupport.ro).

This Call for Proposals is aimed at Romanian audiovisual professionals willing to participate in one Training courses co-financed by the MEDIA Programme.

Eligible activities :

Training in screenplay writing techniques:

  • writing workshops (training based on screenplays being written or in the process on being developed), which mainly request the participation of the screenwriter/director and/or producer;
  • training in writing fiction, animation, interactive scenarios and creative documentary;
  • training for young audiences, including animation;
  • training for story editors and script doctors

Management: economic and commercial management and legal aspects analyzed in respect to a European dimension. Training courses will concentrate on:

  • management of audiovisual companies, including animation;
  • finance and production;
  • legal aspects;
  • sales and distribution;
  • regulation of European audiovisual Industry;
  • intellectual property and author's rights;
  • development of projects (feature films, creative documentary, animation);
  • exhibition and distribution strategies;
  • marketing and promotion of films;
  • management of archives

New Technologies and new media: to develop the ability in the industry to use advanced creative techniques taking into account the European market, notably in the fields of:

  • development of the ability to use advanced creative techniques for development, production and post-production;
  • development of interactive content;
  • use and development of new technologies for the protection and enhancement of the European film and audio-visual heritage;
  • multimedia management;
  • developing animation techniques

The grant will cover 50 % of the participation fees (except scholarships granted by the training institution), and 100 % of the travel, accommodation and subsistence costs (if they are not included in the participation fees) to attend the seminars of training courses.

General Guidelines

The grant scheme Training consists of a minimum of 40 media professionals who will be trained in issues such as:

-management and entrepreneurship of SME’s in audiovisual media in view of sustainable development

- project management and development

- promotion, marketing and distribution of audiovisual works: establishing a marketing policy to adapt to the international market

The training activities will have a component organised locally by the technical assistance team and the Romanian counterparts as an awareness raising for the forthcoming possibility of participation in the MEDIA training sessions and will comprise:

- assessment of the training needs expressed by the audiovisual professionals

- development of the training methodology (partnership with the MEDIA training programme) and carrying out of the awareness raising sessions

The second part of the training programme will consists in participation of Romanian audio-visual professionals in the training sessions organised by the MEDIA Training community programme.
